The article “Students Create Music From Nature Data” is an article about Michigan Tech students using their collected data from Isle Royale and creating music with the sounds. During a science display at the college, the student’s project and data was displayed by a poster. The students wanted to get people involved with the data and project they were a part of and a poster was not sufficing.
The students decided to take the sounds from the island and create a song/music to go along with it. There are three elements to the song. Nature, the wolves, and the moose. You can hear the difference in weather, the moose noises, and the populations of wolves flourishing and dying. The song can be controlled by the listener. The listener can adjust the sounds of nature within the song. The concept of student-centered learning was a complete success for the students. They are collecting data from a remote island. The students are completely active in this process, which creates a love for the project inside of them. The students took the responsibility to research and come up with a plan, and ultimately create the song. If the students were forced to do this project and create the music, the outcome and determination would most likely be dramatically lowered.

After watching Ken Robinsonś TED talk about education I realized that genuis hour is really opposite of what we are currently learning in school. I honestly agree with every aspect of Ken Robinsonś TED talk besides his ADHD point. In school we are not taught to use our creativity, we are taught to memorize, to take tests. Schools do not encourage diversity anymore, but they do conformity. This factor is not the teachers fault either, it is the states. The state controls what we learn and do not learn in school. How smart I am is judged upon test scores I receive, not the overall picture. Kenś talk pertains to genius hour because genius hour is the example of how studentś should be learning. Studentś should explore the depth of their imagination and creativity, not memorization.
As I was watching Ken's TED talk I was intruged the entire time. He stated initional points and builded off of them. He also formated and prepared his speech very well. I never was confused on what he was saying. I will use this method in my TED talk to keep listeners intruged and to make sure they understand my viewpoint. In the article How do Geniuses Think? the author believes that most geniuses are fathered by men older than thirty and women younger than 25. The author emphasizes that geniuses do no have to be the smartest people on the planet, ¨...creativity is not the same as intelligence.¨
The authors interpenetration of being a genius is different then conventional definitions of genius, because the first word that pops into peoples head as they hear ¨genius¨ is a very smart and intellectual person. Geniuses have shared strategies on how they deal with problems. They think of how many different ways a problem can be solved, and how they can learn and rethink the way they see problems. Geniuses all have productive thinking. Using my genius hour project I can put in action some of the methods that geniuses use. Instead of looking at the band room and knowing what I want to do. I am going to look outside of the box and draw out all of the options of how to organize the band room. Using the methods of a genius can ultimately open my eyes to a better solution. Thus saving time and money in the end. The article "Genius Hour" summarizes that genius hour allows students to push themselves into a topic that interests them. The freedom of allowing students to choose what they want to learn about increases their self-driven integrity. Students brainstorm in order to impact their topics, instead of being told what to do. The article says that the toughest part was getting student's to come up with an idea, "Schools just haven't trained them to think that way, teachers said." Genius hour is very important because it is a hour for students to learn about themselves. The article also says that education is very limited on freedom, genius hour allows a bit of freedom to seep through.
As I read the article "Genius Hour" I realized how truly blessed I am to be able to participate. In a standard day in school I am told what to do. So I follow the steps by temporarily memorizing information. I usually am never given the opportunity to think for myself and to be creative. Through the article I have learned that anything is possible with genius hour. Not every student has the opportunity to participate in this hour, so I am going to take full advantage of this opportunity. What I read in the article motivated me to take this hour more seriously. In fact it is not just "a hour" it is "my hour". So what am I going to do with "my hour"? I am going to approach my genius hour project with an eye of a tiger, and not stop until I have fulfilled my goals. The band is a very powerful force in the Kingsford High School. There is just two problems in the department, cleanliness and organization. Within the month of October I intend to put air fresheners and febreze in all of the band uniform closets. Even though the band uniforms are dry cleaned once a year, the smell of sweat stains the core of them. The smell of one uniform can contaminate all of the surrounding uniforms. Air fresheners can help eliminate the smell. My goal for November is to hold fundraisers to buy plastic storage filers. As soon as one walks into the band room there is a layout of messiness. There are papers all over the floor, shelves, cabinets, etc. It honestly looks like a kindergartner's bedroom. The storage containers will give the band room a more organized look. Leaning on the organization route, in the month of December I want to place recycling bins in the room. Just in the high school band we have 100+ students. Half of the time all of these students bring in drinks, and then just throw them away normally. I can achieve the goal of placing recycling bins because I am Co-President of the high school's environmental club. We have already placed recycling bins through the school, and we would love to place one more. All of the goals I listed above I plan to achieve before January 10, 2017.
