The article "Genius Hour" summarizes that genius hour allows students to push themselves into a topic that interests them. The freedom of allowing students to choose what they want to learn about increases their self-driven integrity. Students brainstorm in order to impact their topics, instead of being told what to do. The article says that the toughest part was getting student's to come up with an idea, "Schools just haven't trained them to think that way, teachers said." Genius hour is very important because it is a hour for students to learn about themselves. The article also says that education is very limited on freedom, genius hour allows a bit of freedom to seep through.
As I read the article "Genius Hour" I realized how truly blessed I am to be able to participate. In a standard day in school I am told what to do. So I follow the steps by temporarily memorizing information. I usually am never given the opportunity to think for myself and to be creative. Through the article I have learned that anything is possible with genius hour. Not every student has the opportunity to participate in this hour, so I am going to take full advantage of this opportunity. What I read in the article motivated me to take this hour more seriously. In fact it is not just "a hour" it is "my hour". So what am I going to do with "my hour"? I am going to approach my genius hour project with an eye of a tiger, and not stop until I have fulfilled my goals.

The band is a very powerful force in the Kingsford High School. There is just two problems in the department, cleanliness and organization. Within the month of October I intend to put air fresheners and febreze in all of the band uniform closets. Even though the band uniforms are dry cleaned once a year, the smell of sweat stains the core of them. The smell of one uniform can contaminate all of the surrounding uniforms. Air fresheners can help eliminate the smell. My goal for November is to hold fundraisers to buy plastic storage filers. As soon as one walks into the band room there is a layout of messiness. There are papers all over the floor, shelves, cabinets, etc. It honestly looks like a kindergartner's bedroom. The storage containers will give the band room a more organized look. Leaning on the organization route, in the month of December I want to place recycling bins in the room. Just in the high school band we have 100+ students. Half of the time all of these students bring in drinks, and then just throw them away normally. I can achieve the goal of placing recycling bins because I am Co-President of the high school's environmental club. We have already placed recycling bins through the school, and we would love to place one more. All of the goals I listed above I plan to achieve before January 10, 2017.
